The Hughson Westlake protocol is a widely used method of manual audiometry that is performed using an ascending technique done using 5-dB steps. It was developed based on the idea that short tone bursts against a background of silence are detected more easily than a continuous tone separated by short intervals when the level is being changed. The method was developed in 1944 was adapted in the 1960’s to be automated. This automated protocol is called Auto-Hughson Westlake.
